Tree and Shrub Planting in Fairfield County

One of the most common questions we’re asked is, “When is the best time to plant or transplant trees and shrubs?” The short answer is, "Anytime, as long as the soil or ground isn't frozen." At A. KRETA AND SON, we believe in general that you'll increase your chance of success if you plant or replant in autumn, (though some trees and shrubs fair better in spring* – please read on)...

Tree and Shrub Planting

Why is fall or autumn the best time to plant trees and shrubs? For one thing, fall brings cooler temperatures and more even climate conditions. Cooler air is easier on plant foliage, resulting in less stress to plants during establishment. In contrast, the soil below is warmer in fall, which stimulates proper root growth, (root systems should be fairly established before going dormant).

By spring, root systems should be well-established. Finally, there are typically less insect and disease problems in the fall than spring. There is some consensus that while pre-balled and burlapped trees and shrubs should be planted in fall, that plants with “bare roots” should wait until early spring. *In fact, certain species are best planted in spring. Some examples include Japanese Maples, Flowering Dogwoods, Magnolias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas.
